How to read and find unread mail in your Gmail inbox

Say you have 20 unread emails in your inbox but they are buried in some of the 8000+ emails that you have already read. How do you go about searching for them.

Gmail currently does not allow you to directly search for unread emails in specific folders so the approach is to use labels to do the search. Hence for example if you have a tag "linkedin", and you want to search all unread emails within a folder with that tag, type the following in the search mail box:
label:linkedin label:unread
and click on the search mail button! Presto!

Similarly, you can search for unread emails in your inbox:
label:inbox label:unread
and search email. Enjoy!
